UP Kalilayan is a socio-cultural organization based in the University of the Philippines-Diliman composed of students from the provinces of Quezon & Aurora.__________________________________________________________________________________Over a quarter of a century and, indeed, UP KALILAYAN has evolved from a small, promising group to a premiere, rapidly expanding socio-cultural organization committed to serving the provinces of Quezon and Aurora while, at the same time, developing its members' potentials and capabilities.BEGINNINGSKalilayan's history dates back in the late 1970's, when four friends namely Rogelio Almazan, Guillermo Franco, Jose Olivera, and Rene Raya thought of forming an organization, which would promote camaraderie among UP Diliman students from Quezon so they could cope with the rigors and demands of college life.Duly acknowledged by the University of the Philippines as a university based organization, it gained momentum when it was finally recognized on August 19, 1975, accepting students from the provinces of both Quezon and Aurora as members.ABOUT THE NAMEThe name KALILAYAN was taken from the earliest pre-recorded settlement in Quezon from the Tagalog word lilay, a type of wild grass then abundant in several parts of the province.The name KALILAYAN means friendship and camaraderie. Kalilayan is not merely an organization, it is a family who shares in the joys and sorrows of every member and who helps and assists one another. The spirit of friendship and togetherness remains the guiding hand of Kalilayans, who for twenty-eight years existed to serve, to lead, and to offer the warmth of their wings to this specially-gifted individuals in this exciting world called the University of the Philippines.The name KALILAYAN also means service.
