Civic & Social Organization - Soweto, Gauteng, South Africa
Utho Ngathi Disabilty Projects is an organisation that supports persons with disabilities who are living in disadvantaged communities in Southern Africa. All our activities and projects are designed to develop persons with disabilities and make inclusion a reality for their lives. The number of persons with disabilities in the Southern African Region is estimated at more than 40 million - with a population of 280 million in 15 countries, that means at least 15 percent of the total population. People with disabilities are often socially excluded and inclusion is hardly an issue. Disability is caused by many factors, including malnutrition and disease, crime, environmental hazards, industrial accidents and complications during birth and the number continues to increase. Often persons with disabilities are living in homes and community environments, where there is lack of knowledge or access to basic services, and they are hardly ever given the same treatment as the other members of the community. Our many years on the ground experience and hands on ability throughout rural and peri-urban South Africa and Zambia has enabled us to gain insight into the challenges and needs of these often neglected persons of our societies. What has emerged, which so often does when potential is unleashed - are bright, hopeful persons who will grasp the slightest opportunities granted them with both hands.
