The Quinta da Pedra Alta and the Quinta da Cruz, were already regarded in 1940 as some of the highest-producing farms of generous wines in the Douro, a time when António Leal and Maria da Conceição Pinto, grandparents of the current owner Jorge Eduardo Branco Pinto Leal, was at the helm. In that farm there is still a house that used to be called the "MUDA" (change), since that was the place used to change the horses in the journeys down south and up north, which gives us an overview of the importance of the farms in their locations.Nowadays the farms take up an area of 90 ha of land and vineyards that are still today regarded with respect and tender care by the people working therein. For many years the farm's productions had been focused in the production of fortified wine which was then sold to merchants, as well as small quantities of red and white for self-consumption.A vineyard modernization program began in 1995 and in 2001 began the construction of a wine-cellar and also the production of DOC wines as well as regional Douro wines, both red and white. With several awards and gold medals already won, the wine presents extraordinary qualities, only possible due to the commitment and a strong investment towards reaching the highest quality.Joining tradition and newest techniques, the Quinta currently has the most modern technology and vinification methods from the traditional Douro grapes: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Sousão and Vinhas Velhas in the red wines, and Malvasia Fina, Gouveio, Rabigato, Viosinho and Fernão Pires in the white wines. The bottling and trading of the wines began in 2001, with the whole production being placed directly in both national and international markets.
