Fund-raising - Phoenix, Arizona, United States
In 62 years of service to the Phoenix community, VNSA has become synonymous with the largest charity used book sale in the Southwest. This all-volunteer organization collects, categorizes, and prepares donated books and media throughout the year for the annual VNSA Used Book Sale, a two-day event held every February at the Arizona State Fairgrounds. All proceeds from the sale benefit local charities, including Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation and Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County.VNSA began in 1949 as the auxiliary and fundraising arm of the Visiting Nurse Service in Phoenix. When the Visiting Nurse Service became affiliated with a hospital in 1987, the members of VNSA chose to remain active supporting Valley nonprofit agencies. The members adopted a new name (Volunteer Nonprofit Service Association) and continued their signature book sale. The VNSA Used Book Sale is the sole event of VNSA. Each year, more than 500,000 books, media, and book-related items are available at the sale, attracting thousands of shoppers from all parts of the United States. In 2017, the VNSA Used Book Sale raised more than $340,000 for local charities. Since the first sale in 1957, VNSA has returned more than $8 million to our community.
