Political Organization - Los Angeles, California, United States
The goal of our 2016 CA Ballot Measure is to create systematic transparency of the sources and uses of money used to influence elections and government decisions in California. This will help voters evaluate messages and make decisions in their interests. It will also reverse the tuning-out of citizens who think that their vote and their participation don't matter, due to the influence of secret money. We want to help re-engage them as active participants in a government that is of, by, and for the people. Citizens United and other election law changes have resulted in an assault on democracy: • Money flooding into elections due to Citizens United. • $1 billion spent annually in California on lobbying & campaigns. • Contributions can't be traced due to outmoded laws & systems. • Gifts & revolving door job offers tilt policy away from public interest. • Voters tuning out - they think secret money matters and they don't. Our solution is called the Voters' Right to Know Act. It includes: A first-in-the nation constitutional right: • Disclose political money sources & spending • Limit secret influence on government decisions Implementing laws: • Trace money back to original donors, not vaguely-named nonprofits. • Require political ads show top 3 funders. • Make government contract lobbyists register. • Restrict revolving-door job offers for 2 years. • Ban gifts from lobbyists & their clients.
