WASH Reporter came as a result of the Water Hackathon at Makerere University sponsored by the World Bank building ICT solutions to solve Water problems. WASH REPORTER stands for Water, Sanitation and Health. The application was birthed by a seven member team during the Water Hackathon held in Kampala from 21st to 23rd October 2011. Since Sanitation and health are closely linked to the availability of water, the team decided to create an application which will integrate both of them. Wash reporter is an application which enables the general public report any water, sanitation and health crisis in their area. They can submit the report by email, sms (not yet implemented) or by logging onto the website and filling in a report form. When a report is submitted, the crisis is automatically mapped onto the web interface. From the web interface, one can choose to see the crisis's in all categories or can choose to see one by one. A report can be submitted with both pictures and video in the case of submitting from the web interface. One can then click on a crisis in case they want to read about it in detail. Since the crisis are mapped onto a map, one can be able to see the area which needs more attention by looking where there are more mapped problems hence making it easy to prioritize. The WASH Reporter platform enables the public get updated with news concerning water, sanitation and health in their area through alerts. The public can also subscribe to get alerts about any catastrophe in their area and when one is detected, they are immediately sent an alert to warn them.
