A dynamic coalition of experts from the healthcare, business, and fundraising sectors of Long Island, Women & Men Against Prostate Cancer, Inc. (W&MAPC) is driving a collaborative initiative that is working toward improving, and expanding, treatment options; furthering education efforts; generating legislative action in support of prostate cancer research and treatment; and, most importantly, increasing awareness about the disease, and how its incidence will inevitably impact the lives of every man and woman. Women, in particular, share vital support roles as both healthcare watchdogs, and treatment advocates for the men in their lives. Early, and regular testing, is the most effective way to combat prostate cancer. Understanding, and recognizing, the initial warning signs requires insight, diligence and honest communication between partners, and all family members. By raising public awareness, promoting research, advancing new healthcare options, emphasizing early detection, and making diagnosis and treatment more affordable for cancer patients and their families, W&MAPC is helping to reverse a deadly trend. The organization is committed to shielding families from the devastating effects of prostate cancer, through its counseling and support services for patients and families battling the disease— and widows, whose husbands have lost the fight. Co-founded by Lorraine Pace, founding president of Breast Cancer Help, Dominick Mavellia, prominent L.I. developer, and Dr. Sunni Aildi, Chief Physicist at Stony Brook Medicine, the regional non-profit has dedicated its influence and resources to bringing the stigma, and misconceptions, related to prostate cancer out of the shadows.
