Non-Profit - Croydon, ENG, UK
Founded in 2004, Young Roots works with young refugees and asylum seekers aged 11-25 supporting them to improve their lives and reach their potential. We work in Croydon and Brent primarily, and in 2019 worked with 650 young people from 48 different countries. In 2016 we launched our 1:1 Casework Service for the most vulnerable young refugees and asylum seekers. There is huge demand for this service and we have trebled its capacity since launch. In April 2019 we launched our Advice and Support Hubs with partner organisations bringing together expert therapeutic and legal advice and support, our Casework Service and our key youth activities. We run weekly youth groups, a girls' group with our partners, The Refugee Council, a weekly cycling project with our partners The Bike Project, a weekly football project, holiday trips, residentials and several weekly English language learning projects. As part of our Youth Participation Strategy, we launched our Youth Leadership Group in 2018. We continue to learn hugely from this group who now advise the Board on their views on priorities. Our work is focused on the outcomes of supporting young refugees and asylum seekers to access their rights and entitlements; reducing their social isolation; improving their communication skills; and improving their leadership skills. We have a strong track-record of success and developed processes for monitoring and evaluation. In a recent major external evaluation, 96% or young people said that Young Roots had helped them, and 96% of stakeholders/partners said our work had a high or very high impact.
