Young Womxn Emerge was founded by three students of Barnard College, Heaven Okumakpeyi, Shyanne Francis, and Kayla Burns, in August 2020. The program seeks to provide college mentorship to young, BIPOC women who attend public, and/or low resource secondary schools. As young, black women who have been through the college process and transition, we aim to provide meaningful mentorship to high school students, who are underrepresented in spaces of higher education, and share information that will help prepare them for their collegiate journey. Our goal is to connect women attending high school as juniors and seniors across the U.S. with other amazing women of color who attend college and universities across the U.S, and to provide the guidance that is needed during the college application process, throughout college and beyond.
