Food Production - Kamperland, Zeeland, Netherlands
Zeewaar founders and owners Jennifer Breaton and Rebecca Wiering joined the challenge in 2013 to make business practices more sustainable. In the world of seaweed, there was (and still is) a lot to improve. In the world of consumption, there are opportunities to offer people healthy and ecologically responsibly produced ingredients. The inspiring bit was to create Zeewaar from day 1 as a business that is in fact good for the environment. Ecologically, seaweed acts as a nursery for life in the seas and oceans, it filters the water, it balances the ecosystem by providing oxygen, and it protects against coastal erosion. When cultivated in clean seawater, such as Nature Park the Eastern Scheldt, seaweed is indeed healthy as well as tasty. It combines minerals, vitamins, and fibers. But it also contains healthy compounds not found in food from the land, such as fucoidans and alginates. To proof that our products are of the highest premium quality, we went through rigorous screening to receive the EU BIO certificate in 2018.
