Nederlandsch-Indische Bierbrouwerijen was initially established in Medan in 1929, with a brewery in Surabaya. The Company's seat was moved to Surabaya in 1936 and in that same year Heineken NV became a major shareholder. In 1951, the Company’s name was changed to Heineken's Nederlandsch-Indische Bierbrouwerijen Maatschappij NV. In 1972 a new brewery was constructed in Tangerang.After changing its name several times, the Company went public in 1981 and adopted a new name, PT Multi Bintang Indonesia, and moved its seat from Surabaya to Jakarta.
