In the late 1970's, a group of forward-thinking parishioners of St. James Episcopal Church in downtown Baton Rouge envisioned a full-service retirement community that would be seen as the first choice for active, successful aging. St. James Place opened in 1983, fulfilling that vision, and became the first retirement community in the state of Louisiana. The majestic Duplantier Oak, over 220 years old, is the symbolic centerpiece of the community, an example of strength, beauty, and character. Further positioning St. James Place as a leader in senior living, the installation of campus-wide generators was completed in 2012 giving St. James Place the ability to remain fully operational in the event of a power outage.
