Fund-raising - Pewsey, England, United Kingdom
In 2007 the charity Afrikaya was formed. Why? To build a nursery school from scratch for underprivileged children in the Gambia. The creation of the school is to help this poverty stricken community to take control of their lives and end their poverty through education. The vision began when Geoff and Di Miles visited the area and met an inspirational man, Kebba Jaina. Concerned his community had little opportunity to become educated, earn a living and free themselves from poverty, he wanted to create a school. Sadly, Kebba has since died, but his dream lives on through Afrikaya. The local PTA have named a tree on the school site "The Kebba Jaina Tree". A symbol of STRENGTH, GROWTH and LIFE - a truly fitting tribute to his memory. Many of you have and are helping us to reach our goals through sponsorship, supporting our events and organising your own events in aid of Afrikaya. But whatever your support or interest, past, present or future, from the children of the Gambia and from us a heartfelt: WHO ARE WE? Afrikaya is a Pewsey based charity, with full charitable status, registered with The Charity Commissioners in the UK. Our UK Trustees are: Geoff Miles (Chair) Di Miles (Secretary and Treasurer) Sanjeen Payne Kumar (Business Development) Helen Payne Kumar (fundraising organiser)
