Political Organization - Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
Currently, the Member of Parliament from Shivamogga, Karnataka, I have been active in public life since 1965. In 2007, I was sworn Chief Minister of Karnataka in 2008 and have been the President of Karnataka wing of BJP serving the State and the party in various capacities. My initiation into public life started with RSS at the age of fifteen and was appointed the Taluk President of Jansangh at the age of 29. During the emergency, which was the darkest days in the Indian Democracy, I was imprisoned for forty-five days at Shivamogga and Ballari prisons. The welfare of farmers and marginalized people are my main concerns and throughout my public life, I have devoted my efforts to upholding and safeguarding the rights of the farmers; rehabilitating bonded labourers; and, undertaking relief work in drought areas. Since 1983 I have been incessantly working to strengthen the Party and have been elected to the Karnataka State Assembly 6 times and have served as Karnataka State BJP Party President from 1988 to 1991. In 1994 I was the leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka State Legislative Assembly. As the Deputy Chief Minister, I held the Finance portfolio and presented two budgets that were pro-people and pro-development. In 2008, I was the first BJP Chief Minister of Karnataka. During my tenure as CM, I initiated several programmes for the welfare of the poor and underprivileged. I am proud to say that my Government succeeded in issuing BPL cards to over 1.20 crore people in the State and extended irrigation facility to over 16,000 hectares of land besides laying 10,000 km of roads across the State.
