"Improving agricultural production through research and transfer of innovation": this has been the mission of Società Produttori Sementi Bologna (PSB) since 1911. Thanks to its own research activity, aiming to create increasingly innovative and high-yield varieties, as regards both production and quality, Società Produttori Sementi Bologna has become a leading company in the wheat sector todayAt present, the Company is engaged in the area of cereals (common and durum wheat) and forage plants (alfalfa). Plant breeding is managed according to traditional methods and using modern technologies (e.g. molecular markers). Particular attention is paid to the technological needs of the processing industries, with the aim of developing low-impact agriculture that is more environmentally friendly (eg mycotoxins content, functional foods). The Company has links with several public and private research centres in Italy, Europe and other countries. For durum wheat, the combination of the PSB genetics and the know-how of Barilla, the leader company in pasta production, has led to the development and wide-spread use of many varieties characterized by their higher quality and productivity compared to traditional durum varieties.In 2000, Produttori Sementi became the first Italian seed company to be granted UNI EN ISO 9001 certification for its activities in plant breeding, variety release, production, and the sale of cereal, industrial and forage crop seeds.
