STEPS (Science, Technology and Engineering Preview Summer) for Girls is a five-day residential summer camp at UW-Stout whose mission is to increase the confidence and interest of young women to pursue opportunities in science, technology and engineering fields. Through hands-on activities in a high-energy and immersive environment, STEPS campers are inspired, excited and empowered to consider pursuing STEM fields. Each STEPS camper builds her very own obstacle avoiding robot, from scratch, in state-of-the-art facilities at UW-Stout. Technical classes, including plastics engineering, metal casting, electronics, packaging, manufacturing, CAD, automation, robotics, multimedia, graphics communications, chemistry, mathematics, biology and physics, are taught by industry and university professionals. Campers also enjoy recreational activities, such as a high ropes course, swimming, and karaoke, tour local manufacturing industries, stay in the dorms and engage with women industry leaders.STEPS for Girls has inspired over 3500 campers. Alumni surveys indicate that STEPS campers are 3x more likely to pursue STEM fields in college and continue towards an advanced STEM degree at a significantly higher rate then the national average (2014 Alumni survey). Campers return as Junior Counselors, Lab Assistants and Counselors. Lab Assistants and Counselors participate in BOLD STEPS (Building Opportunities through Leadership Development), a integrated leadership development program throughout STEPS. BOLD STEPS participants engage in leadership training during their time at STEPS and practice their leadership skills throughout their role.
