The Friends of the Scrubs have been working together to cherish Wormwood Scrubs Park since the early 2000s. At 67 hectares, Wormwood Scrubs is the largest open space in the borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. The eastern half is a huge expanse of grass big enough for sports pitches and space to fly kites, run about and picnic. The western side is more wild. Areas of woodland, scrub and meadows with grass paths and nature trails give an opportunity to explore and see nature up close. The 'Scrubs' has about 18 hectares of tree cover and 22 hectares of long grass meadow with almost 100 species of birds and 250 species of wildflowers (one sixth of the UK flora). The friends of the scrubs are a registered charity (reg: 1187120) and community group bringing together local people to speak up for the Scrubs and for the creatures (human and non-human) and plants which benefit from it being protected as one of the last remaining wild open spaces in an area surrounded on all sides by urban development.
