Youth Rising Up for NDCs (YUP4NDCs) is an initiative bringing together young people and youth groups from around the world to jointly advocate for increased fairness and ambition in the NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions) of the biggest emitter countries on the way to COP26 (UN Climate Conference in Glasgow 2021. Our goal is to draw as much attention as possible to the necessary improvement of the NDCs before COP26. It is about youth rising up and making sure that the NDCs of the biggest emitters do not block, but enable a climate-just future. Why NDCs and why now?The NDCs are binding for all countries that are part of the Paris Agreement and regulate the implementation of the climate targets in these countries. Thus, the NDCs form the vehicles to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees and ensure global climate and intergenerational justice. It is therefore essential that they are formulated in a fair and ambitious way. The NDCs must reflect the seriousness of the climate crisis and the willingness to act. In 2020 the countries' NDCs had to be submitted for the first time. Accordingly, at COP26 in Glasgow, these will be the focus of great attention. Therefore, with YUP4NDC we want to raise attention to the lack of ambition and fairness. Right now there are still some countries that have not submitted their NDCs - among them also some of the biggest emitters. Even those NDCs submitted are insufficient according to the interim report by the UNFCCC in 2020. This is inacceptable when considering the largest emitters being responsible for about 60-63 % of global emissions.Who is rising up?Our main goal with YUP4NDCs is to set a focus on getting the biggest emitter countries to raise their ambition and fairness in their NDCs. However, within the initiative we are youth from these big emitter countries (including developed countries and emerging economies) and youth from non-big emitter countries (including developing and climate vulnerable countries).
